Welcome to our member spotlight series. Today we have Ruth Hartt, a voice teacher in the Boston area. If you are a current Music Teacher’s Helper user and would like to be featured on the blog, please fill out this questionnaire.

How long have you been teaching music?

15 years.

How would you describe your studio space to someone that’s never visited?

My home studio is comfortable, spacious, and bright, with lots of natural light. It is equipped with a Roland electric piano, microphones, recording equipment, iMac computer, and a portable PA system.

What is one piece of advice you could offer to someone looking to start teaching music lessons?

A professional website is a must.

Is there a favorite piece or style of music you find yourself teaching your students today? And how has that changed from when you started teaching?

I really enjoy teaching musical theater, pop, and jazz. When I first started teaching, I taught what I knew from my undergraduate music program: classical art song and opera. But I gradually began to recognize that 99% of my students wanted to learn how to sing more contemporary styles, so I adapted.

How long have you been using Music Teacher’s Helper?

Since August 2010 (almost 6 years).

What is your favorite thing about Music Teacher’s Helper?

I love how Music Teacher’s Helper has helped me organize my students’ information and my bookkeeping. I like that students can login to their account and view upcoming lessons and available lesson slots on the studio calendar. I also really like the automated lesson reminder emails – nobody can say “I forgot I had a lesson!”
